IN THE UNITED STATES:

Over 3.3 million referrals of child abuse involving 6 million children were reported in 2008. Of these, approximately 772,000 were found to be victims of abuse and neglect.

In the year 2008, there were 1,740 children died due to physical abuse or neglect. Infant boys had a rate of 19.31 deaths per 100,000 boys of that age. Infant girls had a rate of 17.22 deaths per 100,000 girls of that age. 40% of child fatalities were caused by multiple maltreatment types.

An abused child returned to parents without intervention has a 45% chance of being seriously injured. 1.96% of 100,000 children are killed.

1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will experience child sexual abuse before their 18th birthday.

91% of sex offenders are known to the child or adolescent victim. 90% of the victims were abused by a parent or parents.

In 2008; 269,000 children received foster care services as a result of investigations or assessments.

50 - 60% of deaths resulting from abuse and neglect are not reported.

 

 

IN MICHIGAN:

8% of children in Michigan lived in families who were investigated for suspected child abuse or neglect during 2008.

There were 29,401 confirmed victims of abuse or neglect in 2008.

Approximately 15,000 children experienced out-of-home care for abuse or neglect in 2008.

 

IN OCEANA COUNTY:

831 children lived in a family where reported child abuse or neglect resulted in an investigation during 2008.

There were 116 confirmed victims of abuse and neglect during 2008.

IN LAKE COUNTY:

286 children lived in a family where reported child abuse or neglect resulted in an investigation during 2008.

There were 31 confirmed victims of abuse and neglect during 2008.

 

IN MASON COUNTY:

637 children lived in a family where reported child abuse or neglect resulted in an investigation during 2008.

There were 83 confirmed victims of abuse or neglect during 2008.

 

IN NEWAYGO COUNTY:

1,385 children lived in a family where reported child abuse or neglect resulted in an investigation during 2008.

There were 179 confirmed victims of abuse or neglect during 2008.

 

IN MANISTEE COUNTY:

491 children lived in a family where reported child abuse or neglect resulted in an investigation during 2008.

There were 49 confirmed victims of abuse or neglect during 2008.

 

IN MUSKEGON COUNTY:

3,796 children lived in a family where reported child abuse or neglect resulted in an investigation during 2008.

 

More Facts

There are nearly 3 million reports of child abuse made annually.

In 2004, there were 872,000 child abuse convictions.

The rate of child abuse is estimated to be 3 times greater than is reported.

1,500 children die every year from child abuse and neglect. That is over 4 fatalities every day. 3 out of the 4 will be under the age of 4.

A report of child abuse is made every 4 seconds.

1 in 5 children will be sexually abused by the age of 18.

36.7% of women and 14.4% of men in the United States prison system were abused as children.

1/3 of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children.

 

Consequences Of Child Abuse

80% of young adults who had been abused met the diagnostic criteria for at least 1 psychiatric disorder at the age of 21. These include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, & post-traumatic stress disorder.

Abused children are 25% more likely to experience teen pregnancy.

Children who experience child abuse & neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime.

Nearly 2/3’s of the people in treatment for drug abuse reported being abused as children.
